80s Glam Rock “Recycled to the Max”
Costume Designer’s Guild Exhibition Project
Select a contemporary costume designer, pick a character from their contributions to film or television, and use the inspiration drawn from the character’s costume to re-imagine and present the character’s costume in the style of 80s Glam Rock.
The project must be made entirely from recycled and upcycled material, to demonstrate how sustainability can be embraced in the costume industry.
Theme: 80s Glam Rock “Recycled to the Max”
Costume Designer: Judianna Makovsky
Character: Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier)
Movie: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

The accompanying mood board provides a visual insight into the inspiration behind my project. Showcasing images of Bucky Barnes alongside iconic figures from 80s glam rock, including Kiss, Mรถtley Crรผe, and Tom Keifer, it offers a glimpse into the integration of glam rock elements into the redesigned costume. Specifically, I will embrace a punk rock aesthetic in reimagining the costume to align with the original character’s attitude. This will involve incorporating elements such as studs, leather fabric, buckle detailing, fringe, grommets, lacing and various other punk-inspired features throughout the entire costume design.

The Illustration Process

From concept to completion, every aspect of this project was carefully thought out and executed by myself, resulting in this reimagined 80’s Glam Rock Bucky Barnes.
Diving into the Details:
A standout feature of this costume is undeniably the fully studded sleeve. Given the significance of Bucky Barnes’s metal arm in his original costume, it was crucial to seamlessly integrate it into the reimagined look. For this reason, I hand-studded the entire sleeve with metal spike studs and created a sequin glove to extend the metallic appearance from shoulder to fingertip.
Other integral elements from Bucky’s original costume were thoughtfully incorporated into the reimagined ensemble. This includes the red star, mask, buckle detailing, eye makeup, and the utilization of leather-like fabric. The incorporation of buckle detailing not only pays homage to the utilitarian style of the original character’s garments but also serves as a way to connect the studs, grommets, and other silver detailing present throughout the ensemble, creating an overall cohesive look.

On February 24th, 2024, we had the privilege of showcasing our reimagined costumes at the Costume Designer’s Guild. Members of the guild, along with friends and family, had the opportunity to view and engage in discussions about our completed projects.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended our exhibition, we hope you enjoyed our “Recycled to the Max” Glam Rock Costumes!
